President Goodluck Jonathan has joined Nigerian worshippers at the Winners Chapel, also known as the Living Faith Church to pray for peace in Nigeria.
The service was presided over by the general overseer of the church, Bishop David Oyedepo, who reportedly beseeched God to open hell-gate for the political opponents of the president.
According to a report by Pulseng.com, Oyedepo declared his unflinching support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid.

Oyedepo reportedly also said: “I pray that God will grant President Jonathan the unusual grace to meet the demands of his office.”
Jonathan on his part addressed the congregation saying: “I don’t want to talk much before I am accused of coming to Church to campaign for election. I plead with you all to keep praying for successful and peaceful election next month.”

“There are various predictions concerning the election, but I trust God to take control of the situation. I commend Bishop Oyedepo for his commitment to the work of God and education, without education we can’t achieve much,” he added.
Oyedepo is one of the clerics supporting the President and has accompanied him on pilgrimage to Israel. He also reportedly witnessed a meeting between former President, Olusegun Obasanjo and Jonathan, along with the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday visited and worshipped with members of the Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel, at the church’s headquarters in Ota, Ogun state, Nigeria urging the church members to keep praying for the country ahead of the February 2015 elections.

Jonathan arrived the church in a helicopter and attended the church’s third service where he pleaded for prayers saying though he was not in church to campaign – so that people would not read another meaning to his presence – but that there was need for Nigerians to pray for the country as it nears the general elections.

Jonathan noted that there were various predictions concerning the elections, but that he believes that God would take control of the situation.

“I plead with you all to keep praying for a successful and peaceful election next month,” he said just as he commended Bishop David Oyedepo, the church’s general overseer, for his commitment to God’s work and for focusing on education.

Jonathan, who was in the church with some top members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, noted that without education, nothing much can be achieved by a society.

After his short speech, Bishop Oyedepo, who owns several universities and secondary schools, asked the members to pray for the President and for God to give him strength, courage and the wisdom to lead the country aright.

He then prayed for God to bless the President’s endeavour and for an unusual grace to come upon him.

Prior to Jonathan’s arrival, heavily-armed security operatives drawn from Lagos and Ogun states had taken strategic positions within the church to the surprise of many of the members of the church.

Jonathan left with the helicopter with which he had arrived just as the service was ending.

Boko Haram captures Monguno, military base – Security Sources

Boko Haram Islamists on Sunday captured the northeastern town of Monguno, including a military base, after a fierce battle with Nigerian troops, security sources told AFP.

“Monguno has fallen, Monguno has fallen,” said a senior military officer, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to talk to the media.

“We fought them all night long but they took over the town, including the military barracks there,” he said.

Another security source confirmed that the Islamist militants had taken over the town, which lies some 137 kilometres (85 miles) from the Borno State capital, Maiduguri.

“It is true our troops lost Monguno to Boko Haram. They have taken over the town and the military barracks.

“Our troops had to withdraw after fighting the terrorists for several hours. They came in full force and at the end overpowered our men,” he said.

He said troops were making efforts to reclaim the town and the barracks.

“Our fear now is that families of some of our men are trapped in the barracks and of course, the locals, including men and women and children need to be rescued,” he said.

“We also have fighting equipment there and it will be dangerous to leave them at the mercy of the terrorists,” he said.

Hundreds of Boko Haram militants had staged a pre-dawn strike on Monguno, causing terrified locals to flee as soldiers massed.

Analysts said the insurgents might be targeting the town in their push towards south.

However, others have suggested recently that they might be seeking as much weaponry as possible fearing a possible regional counter-insurgency operation.
